Sales tax is a percentage-based tax applied to the sale of goods and services. It is calculated by multiplying the pre-tax price by the applicable tax rate. The total amount paid is the sum of the original price and the tax. For currency conversions try our Currency Converter, or evaluate business returns with ROI Calculator.
In the United States, sales tax rates vary by state, county, and city — ranging from 0% in some states to over 10% in others. Many countries use a national VAT (Value Added Tax) or GST (Goods and Services Tax) instead, which follows the same percentage-based calculation.
To find the price before tax from a tax-inclusive total, divide the total by (1 + tax rate). For example, if the total is $108 and the tax rate is 8%, the price before tax is $108 ÷ 1.08 = $100. The tax amount is $108 - $100 = $8.
